A new study published in Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery (November 2025) confirms a growing body of evidence showing a strong link between Type 2 diabetes and hearing loss. The meta-analysis reviewed 17 prior studies involving nearly 8,000 participants and found that adults with diabetes were more than four times as likely to experience hearing loss compared to those without diabetes.
What the Research Shows
Among participants with diabetes, hearing loss was common, affecting between 40% and 72% of study participants. Those with diabetes for more than ten years or with higher A1C levels were at greater risk. Researchers believe the cause may be related to damage in the tiny blood vessels and nerves of the inner ear, similar to how diabetes can impact the eyes or kidneys.
Why Hearing Health Matters
Hearing loss often develops gradually, making it easy to miss in its early stages. For individuals managing Type 2 diabetes, staying proactive about hearing care can support better communication, safety, and overall quality of life.
What You Can Do
If you or someone you know is living with Type 2 diabetes:
- Schedule regular hearing checks. Monitoring your hearing can detect changes early and allow for timely support.
- Protect your hearing. Limit exposure to loud environments and seek care promptly if you notice difficulty hearing conversations or needing higher volume levels.
At Midwest Hearing, our audiologists understand how overall health, including chronic conditions like diabetes, can influence hearing. Regular hearing assessments are a simple, effective way to maintain hearing wellness over time.
