Causes exist, but are not limited to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Picking their nose<\/li><li>Blowing their nose too hard<\/li><li>Colds or<a href=\"https:\/\/mwent.net\/pediatrics\/ent\/allergy-sinus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> allergies<\/a><\/li><li>Injury<\/li><li>Dryness<\/li><li>Structural problems in the nose<\/li><li>Certain medications<\/li><li>Abnormal growth in the nose or sinuses<\/li><li>Clotting disorders<\/li><li>Blood vessel disorders<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Seeking Medical Attention for a Bloody Nose<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If your child\u2019s nosebleed is especially heavy or cannot be stopped after 20-30 minutes, you should seek immediate medical attention. Additionally, if they experience <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uofmhealth.org\/health-library\/sig56370#:~:text=Nosebleeds%20that%20recur%20often%20are,or%20caused%20by%20an%20injury\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more than four nosebleeds a week,<\/a> they also require a medical evaluation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is There a Way to Prevent Nosebleeds?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before opting for nasal cautery, your child\u2019s doctor may recommend trying other treatment or prevention options. Depending on the cause of their nosebleeds, methods may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Teaching your child to avoid picking or scratching their nose<\/li><li>Treating any medical conditions that are causing nosebleeds<\/li><li>Changing or discontinuing medications that contribute to nosebleeds<\/li><li>Using a humidifier or nasal gels\/sprays to decrease any dryness in the nose<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If these methods don\u2019t work, your child\u2019s doctor will likely recommend nasal cautery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Does Nasal Cauterization Work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Nasal cautery is a procedure where a chemical is applied to the mucous membranes in the nose to stop bleeding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a quick procedure that often takes 5-10 minutes. It\u2019s usually performed using a topical anesthetic while your child is awake. However, in instances where they are having additional procedures to treat other nasal issues at the same time, it may be performed in an operating room under general anesthesia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In most cases, your child should be able to go home immediately following the procedure. They may be fussy afterward. It\u2019s also common for minor nosebleeds and drainage to occur shortly after the procedure as part of the recovery process.
